The American Architect, Richard Meier once said, “Architecture connects the present with the past and the tangible with the intangible”.

Ansel Adams, arguably one of the most influential landscape photographers today once said, “Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas. It is a creative art”.

So, as a professional who has spent the last 20 years combining both Architecture and Photography to earn a living, I believe Architectural Photography should be defined as:
Using photography as the medium to create art that connects the present with the past and the tangible with the intangible.

As a professional Architectural Photographer, my goal each day (big goal, little goal, or crowning achievement) is to create. With the title of photographer attached, one may assume that the use of a camera is my sole means to create. However, that’s only the tip of the iceberg!

It’s easy to create art that’s different, but much more difficult to create art that’s better. Architectural Photography begins with existing elements such as Composition, Features, Design, Space, Direction and Flow. Architectural Photography ends with Light, natural light, existing light, reflective light and the absence of light. Somewhere, briefly thrown in the middle of these elements is a camera, a lens and some technical experience on how to use them.

Greg Folkins is a nationally recognized, award winning Architectural and Commercial photographer available throughout the United States. Greg Folkins is a specialty studio with 20 years professional photography experience in commercial, corporate, industrial and residential real estate.
